Games Teachers Demand Recognition of Sports Certificates in TSC Promotions

Games teachers through their respective sports bodies have written to TSC demanding recognition of their sports certificates in teacher promotion interviews.

KPSSA and KSSA have criticized TSC’s recent decision to stop awarding points for sports achievements in the promotion scorecard. Instead TSC has prioritized teachers involved in exam invigilation, supervision and marking.

Sports Certificates Not Considered

The exclusion of sports accolades from the promotion criteria has angered games teachers who argue sports achievements are key contributions to education and student development.

During teacher clinics participants criticized TSC’s policy shift saying sports play a big role in student growth, discipline and national representation.

The Commission will issue promotion letters in April 2025 to successful candidates after the January-February teacher promotion interviews. The list of promoted teachers will be published on TSC website.

TSC Promotion Process and Criteria

TSC had advertised 25,288 promotion slots across primary and post primary institutions. However the promotion interviews this year were different, focusing mainly on document verification rather than direct questioning.

The promotion scoresheet favored:

  • Older teachers, those above 55 years got 30 marks, while those 30-39 years got 14 marks.
  • Academic qualifications, 5 marks for a Master’s degree, 3 for a Bachelor’s and 1 for a Diploma.
  • Exam invigilation and marking, 4 marks to KNEC examiners.
  • Teaching experience, teachers with 7+ years in the same grade got 50 marks, while those with 3 years got 10 marks.

TSC Promotions and Upcoming Retirements

TSC will promote teachers into different administrative positions to fill vacancies left by upcoming retirements in June and August 2025. The Commission is also seeking extra funding to promote an additional 20,000 teachers. However all successful teachers must submit five mandatory clearance documents as per Chapter 6 of the Kenya Constitution which are:

  1. Certificate of Good Conduct from DCI
  2. HELB Clearance Certificate
  3. KRA Tax Compliance Certificate
  4. EACC Clearance
  5. CRB Clearance

What’s Next for Games Teachers

KPSSA and KSSA officials are now lobbying for the review of the promotion scorecard to include sports credentials saying games teachers contribute a lot to student development.

The teacher promotions debate will heat up as TSC finalizes the promotions in April.
