KNEC Invites Qualified Teachers for Item-Writing Training Ahead of Grade 10 Rollout

KNEC Announces Item Writing Training for Teachers

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened applications for teachers who want to improve their skills in test development through an item writing training.

In a public notice dated April 2, KNEC said the training is aimed at strengthening the implementation of the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) framework in Basic Education and teacher training institutions. The training will equip educators with the skills to develop high quality test items aligned to CBA principles.

According to KNEC, teachers who complete the training may be considered for future engagement as contracted professionals particularly in assessment development roles.

Eligibility Criteria

The council has set strict criteria for applicants, requiring professionalism, subject mastery and institutional endorsement. To apply, candidates must:

  • Be employed in any of the following:
    • Grades 4–6 in primary schools
    • Grades 7–8 in junior secondary schools
    • Grade 10 in senior secondary schools (to be rolled out in 2026)
    • Teacher training colleges (DTE-PP&P and DSTE)
  • Be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
  • Have a formal recommendation from the head of their institution

Application Procedure and Deadline

Interested and qualified teachers should apply online through the official KNEC portal: https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke. All application materials— including professional credentials and supporting documents—should be combined into one PDF file and uploaded by April 11, 2025.

The training will be virtual and only shortlisted candidates will be communicated to via phone or email.

KNEC has excluded teachers who have already undergone item-writing training from applying as they are not eligible to reapply.
