Mary Hills Girls Wins Big at the 61st Central Region Kenya Science and Engineering Fair

It was a celebration weekend as Mary Hills Girls High School from Kiambu County won overall at the 61st Central Region Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF) held at Nyandarua High School, Nyandarua County.

In the mixed school category, Salient Secondary School from Nyandarua County topped while Njumbi Boys from Murang’a County was the best boys’ school.

Among the five counties, Kiambu County led the pack, followed by Murang’a County, then Nyandarua, Kirinyaga and Nyeri counties.

Showcasing Innovation and Scientific Excellence

The two day event saw over 100 students from the five counties in the Central region showcase their innovative projects in various scientific fields.

Chief Judge Dr. James Nderitu commended the students for their creative and novel ideas and urged them to work on areas of improvement before the national level competition.

“As they go to the national level, they are representing the Central Region as a team. Teachers should guide and support them so they can succeed, and that will be a success for the region,” Dr. Nderitu said.

Encouragement and Future Prospects

At the closing ceremony, Central Regional KSEF Chairperson, Dr. Angles Ngure praised the high level of discipline, creativity and innovation exhibited by the students.

She told the winners to fine tune their projects based on the judges’ feedback to compete effectively at the national fair.

Dr. Ngure also had a message for those who did not make it to the next stage:

“Don’t be disappointed. This is an opportunity to learn, grow and interact with peers from other schools. Keep working on your projects, they may become successful ventures in future”.

She used M-Pesa as an example of how innovative ideas can become life changing solutions.

To the National Competition

The KSEF competition had various categories including:

  • Robotics
  • Computer Science
  • Applied Technology
  • Engineering among othersThose who position one to four in each category have qualified for the national KSEF to be held in two weeks at Kangaru Boys in Embu County.

The competition has shown the increasing interest in science and tech in the Central Region.
