Nyamira Girls, the national and East African hockey champions, suffered a blow today at the on-going Nyanza Regionals Term 1 Games. Ng’iya Girls won 1-0 at St. Joseph Rapogi High School in Migori County.
Match Highlights
The goal was scored by 16-year-old Mercy Rebecca. The team is now looking forward to the national championships in Mombasa next month.
Ng’iya Girls Ready for Nationals and East African Games
The Ng’iya Girls coaching trio—George Nyadida, Edwin Ogony, and Macrine Achieng—are confident at the national level. With this win, they believe they have a team that can not only attend Mombasa but also qualify for the East Africa Secondary School Games in August 2025.
A Victory Built on Investment and Strategy
According to the school’s principal, Mrs. Hellen Masengeli, this was not a fluke. The school has invested a lot in the hockey program and the players get the best training and resources.
Mrs. Masengeli who was the principal of Sinyolo Girls when they won multiple East African titles is confident Ng’iya Girls will follow in those footsteps. Under her leadership Sinyolo Girls won FEASSA titles in:
- 2014 (Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania)
- 2015 (Huye, Rwanda)
- 2016 (Eldoret, Kenya)
- 2017 (Gulu, Uganda)
Road to Nationals
With the national championships looming Ng’iya Girls will fine tune their strategies to be competitive against the best of Kenya. Their good performance at the Nyanza Regionals has put them as serious contenders for the national title and a slot to the East African games.
