There was celebration and jubilation at Kisumu Girls High School after two previously rejected pieces won at the National Drama and Film Festival Gala in Nakuru. The school took top position in both Cultural Creative Dance and Solo Verse, turning earlier regional losses into national wins.
The two pieces had been rejected by judges at the Nyanza Regional Drama Festival at Orero Boys High School but the school’s drama team didn’t give up. They were asked to perform at the national gala and they wowed the audience and judges.
Confidence, Resilience and Belief in Talent
Chief Principal Doreen Odhiambo and her deputy Paninah Abok were over the moon with the girls. Odhiambo while thanking God for what she called a “non-achieving” performance at the earlier stages said the school had always believed in the two pieces.
“We were confident the performances had what it takes to go national,” said Odhiambo, commending the girls for their hard work and discipline.
Drama patron Florence Owino who led the team to Nakuru was equally thrilled. “The journey wasn’t easy,” she said. “We struggled at the regional level but the talent of our students couldn’t be dimmed. Their win at the nationals confirms our efforts.”
The patron also revealed that two students were emcees at the gala, a rare honour that speaks volumes about the school’s all round talent. “These girls are not just performers; they are academic achievers too,” Owino said, urging them to balance their books and co-curricular activities.
Ramba Boys Excel in Choral Verse
Ramba Boys High School had reason to celebrate as their Drama Club won the top prize in Choral Verse at the same national gala.
Co-directors George Agik and Jackton Nyamwanda commended their students for their hard work. “They practiced day and night. We expected good results and we’re grateful to God for guiding us through,” they said.
Second Chance is Power
Two schools have shown that rejection is not the end — it can be the beginning of even greater victories. Their performances at the national gala are proof of second chances, direction and talent in producing all round students.
