TSC Promotions in Limbo as CEO Faces Final Days Amid Mounting Pressure

Uncertainty still surrounds the release of promotion letters to thousands of teachers who were shortlisted for elevation by TSC as Dr. Nancy Macharia’s tenure comes to an end.

Sources close to the matter say strong opposition from the National Assembly has stalled the process and put Dr. Macharia in a tight spot as she prepares to exit after serving the commission for almost a decade.

Assembly Rejects Promotion Criteria

The impasse started when the National Assembly’s Education Committee, led by Julius Melly, rejected the promotions. Speaking in Baringo County over the weekend, Melly said the process was unfair. “We cannot endorse a process that leaves behind long-serving teachers while favoring newcomers. It’s unjust and demoralizing our educators,” he said.

The committee has since described the process as unfair, opaque and poorly executed and says it does not reflect the professional aspirations of the Kenyan teaching workforce.

Pressure Mounts on TSC Leadership

Internally, sources say Dr. Macharia is walking a tightrope. If the promotion process is officially cancelled, it could mar her otherwise good record at the commission.

The standoff is now threatening to erode the goodwill Dr. Macharia has built over the years and complicate any future appointments or roles she may seek post-retirement.

Discontent Across Counties

The delay in releasing promotion letters has frustrated teachers at county and sub-county level. Many had already started celebrating their promotion only to be met with silence and uncertainty. TSC offices across the country are said to be overwhelmed with queries from anxious teachers while some have opted to visit the offices physically to get answers.

Legacy at Stake

Dr. Macharia who has been keen to highlight her achievements during her term now finds herself at a crossroads. The unresolved promotion stalemate could taint her exit and the overall public perception of her leadership. Now!
