2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA): Timetable, Guidelines, and Exam Regulations

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released the official timetable and regulations for the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA). This is a big one for Grade 9 students transitioning to senior school. Below is a breakdown of key instructions, schedule and guidelines for students, teachers, supervisors and centre managers.

Exam Timetable and Scheduling

  • All morning session papers will start at 8:30 a.m.
  • Time allocated for each paper is indicated on the question paper and no extra time will be allowed.
  • Time includes reading through the questions unless otherwise indicated in the special instructions of the paper.

Instructions for Teachers and Candidates

Guidelines for Teachers

Teachers should ensure students are well prepared and aware of the assessment rules. Candidates should be informed of the penalties for examination misconduct.

Rules for Candidates

  • Arrival and Punctuality: Be at the examination centre for the mandatory security check at least 15 minutes before the start of the paper.
  • Late Arrival: Candidates who arrive more than 30 minutes late will only be allowed to sit for the paper under exceptional circumstances.
  • Paper Verification: Check that your question paper is properly printed and all necessary materials (e.g. maps, graphs) are included.
  • Answer Format: Write answers neatly and legibly using black or blue ink. Pencils are only allowed for diagrams.
  • Numbering and Spacing: Start each answer on a fresh line and clearly indicate the question number in the left hand margin.
  • Final Submission: Before submitting your script, ensure you have written your full name, assessment number, signature and date of assessment.

Prohibited Items and Examination Conduct

Forbidden Items

Candidates must not bring the following into the exam room:

  • Books, notes or unauthorized materials.
  • Mobile phones or electronic communication devices.
  • Unapproved calculators or mathematical tables with additional notes.

Rules on Integrity and Cheating

  • Do not share, copy or assist others in any way during the exam.
  • Do not communicate with anyone once you are inside the exam hall.
  • Rough work should be done on the provided answer booklet and left behind for disposal.

Supervisors and Invigilators’ Responsibilities

Supervisors should check that candidates have used their personalized question papers with their names and assigned random numbers.

  • Invigilators should ensure all candidates sign their answer scripts before collection.
  • No unauthorized persons should be in the assessment centre.

Penalties for Examination Irregularities

KNEC has severe penalties for assessment malpractice as per the KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012. The following are severe:

  1. Cheating in any paper results in cancelation of entire subject.
  2. Widespread cheating in an exam centre results in cancelation of all results for that centre.
  3. Unauthorized access or leakage of exam materials attracts up to 10 years in prison or a fine of Ksh 2 million.
  4. Impersonation in an assessment carries up to 2 years in prison or a fine of Ksh 2 million.

Government Intervention and New Measures

To stop exam malpractice the government has introduced the following:

  • Banning the sale of alcohol near schools.
  • All students to reside in school accommodation or accredited private hostels.
  • More police officers to be deployed to assessment centers to prevent access to drugs and other prohibited materials.
