FKE Calls for Strategic Enhancements to CBC Implementation

In response to the evolving demands of the labor market, the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) has advocated for a more streamlined implementation of the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) by the government. Recognizing the importance of equipping students with the skills required by employers, FKE emphasized the need for strategic measures to enhance the effectiveness of CBC.

Addressing Infrastructure Gaps

FKE highlighted the urgent need to prioritize the provision of necessary infrastructure, particularly in rural schools that face significant challenges in this regard. By addressing infrastructure gaps, schools can better facilitate the implementation of CBC, ensuring that all students have access to quality education.

Enhancing Curriculum Relevance

Jacqueline Mugo, Executive Director and CEO of FKE, emphasized the importance of aligning the curriculum with the dynamic requirements of the job market. Acknowledging the government’s commitment to implementing CBC, FKE stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to address current challenges and enhance the curriculum’s relevance.

Early Technology Education

FKE advocated for the early introduction of technology education, starting as early as grades 6–7. By equipping students with practical technology skills at a younger age, they can better adapt to the technology-driven nature of the modern workforce. FKE cautioned against waiting until high school to introduce tech-related studies, emphasizing the importance of early preparation.

Smooth Transition for Students

FKE urged the Ministry of Education to provide clear communication and leadership to address concerns raised by parents regarding the transition period in CBC. With grade 9 students remaining in primary schools where junior secondary is based, FKE emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth transition for students as they progress in their education.

Collaboration for Success

Expressing their commitment to collaboration, FKE affirmed their readiness to work with the government, education stakeholders, and employers to enhance the effectiveness of CBC. By working together, they aim to create an education system that produces graduates equipped with the skills needed for success in the modern workforce.

In conclusion, FKE’s call for strategic enhancements to CBC implementation underscores the importance of aligning education with the evolving demands of the labor market. By prioritizing infrastructure development, curriculum relevance, early technology education, and smooth transitions for students, stakeholders can work together to ensure that CBC effectively prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
