KNEC has introduced the KCSE mid-year examination series which will run from 1st July to 1st August 2025. This will give candidates an opportunity to improve their performance or address challenges that may have prevented them from sitting for exams in previous years.
Dates and Registration
- Registration Period:
- Registration starts on 27th January 2025 and ends 21st February 2025.
- Registration will be done through the KNEC portal with County Directors of Education (CDEs) supervising the process countrywide.
- Registration Process:
- Candidates will present themselves at their respective county headquarters to register.
- Required documents:
- National ID
- Birth Certificate
- KCPE Certificate
- KCSE Result Slip/Certificate
Eligibility
The mid-year examination series is for:
- Candidates who want to retake KCSE to improve their grades.
- Individuals who missed KCSE in previous years due to illness or unforeseen circumstances.
- Adult learners not in regular schools.
- Candidates retaking 7 or more subjects must meet the subject cluster.
Examination and Fees
- Examination Fees:
- The registration fee is Ksh 7,200 regardless of the number of subjects a candidate is retaking.
- Examination Venues:
- Theory and practical papers will be done at county headquarters.
- Projects will be done at sub-county level in institutions identified by Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDEs).
- Grading and Certification:
- Grading and certification will be the same as regular KCSE exams held in November.
Background and Objective
The mid-year KCSE examination was announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba during the release of 2024 KCSE results on 9th January 2025.
“This examination will be for candidates who want to retake KCSE, those who missed the exam due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances and adult candidates,” said Ogamba.
The idea was born out of extensive stakeholder engagement and is to:
