KNEC Opens Grade 10 Learner Registration for School-Based Assessment Under CBC Framework

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has now got underway the registration of Grade 10 students for School-Based Assessment (SBA), a major step forward with the introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) across Kenya’s senior schools.

Registration and Logging In

So schools have been told by KNEC – in a note to principals – that all registered senior school centres need to get Grade 10 students enrolled through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal before the 30th of July 2026 at the latest.

The registration exercise follows a recent round of getting senior school assessment centres registered. KNEC reminded everybody that centres have to be fully registered first, otherwise they wont be allowed to register learners in the SBA programme.

“You should now be able to log in and register Grade 10 learners through the CBA portal for School-Based Assessment (SBA)” KNEC said in a message.

Using Your Universal Centre Code

School principals need to use the universal school code that came out of senior school centre registration to log in to the CBA portal – this acts as both your login username and password.

KNEC made one thing clear though – principals need to get all Grade 10 students registered on time to make sure they all have a chance to be part of the School-Based Assessment programme.

” use the centre code that you got from the Senior School portal during centre registration as both your username and password. Once logged in, register your Grade 10 students on the portal” KNEC explained it one way.

What The CBC Rollout Means

The School-based registration is an important step in hauling in the CBC rollout, which is fundamentally changing how schools teach, how students learn and how their progress is put to the test.

The CBC itself focuses more on building practical skills and applying knowledge in a real world way, rather than just looking at exam results.

Getting On With It

KNEC is keen on principals getting the registration process done in time to avoid messing up the national assessment cycle. They have until the end of July 2026 to get it done, that’s the deadline. If the principals can’t get it done by then – then the whole system will get disrupted.

Meanwhile the council wants to remind schools that registration is key to keeping to the assessment schedule and making sure that all eligible students get a chance to do the School-Based Assessment.

Making Sure Everyone’s On Board

Registration is key to getting all Grade 10 students on the system and moving smoothly through the senior school system with the CBC. The School-Based Assessment is one of the main ways in which this happens.

This is a pretty important bit of business, getting students registered so that they can actually get graded on their classroom work, practicals and real world problem solving skills as well as what they get from textbooks and teachers.

Making It Easier

KNEC has designed the CBA portal so it can handle all the registration and assessment needs of schools. The portal collects data and keeps things pretty level pegging – all schools get to do the same kinds of assessments in the same kind of way.

Schools also need to get their centre registration sorted out first – if they dont have a centre that is registered then they wont be able to get on the portal or even submit their students data.
