Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi has opposed the proposed Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) changes, particularly the plan to drop mathematics from Senior Secondary.
Speaking during the launch of a Ksh 5 million bursary fund for needy students in Webuye East, the MP warned that such changes will have long term effects on the education system in Kenya.
“The changes will affect the quality of education in this country. Let all stakeholders be consulted so that we make informed decisions,” said Wanyonyi.
University Funding Concerns
He also lambasted the delay in university funding, saying many students are struggling financially due to inconsistent government disbursements. He asked the government to prioritize higher education funding, many students rely on these funds to sustain their studies.
At the same time, Wanyonyi told bursary recipients to remain focused on their education and make the most of the financial aid to achieve their academic and career goals.
CBC Reforms Debate
His remarks come as education stakeholders are calling for more consultations before the implementation of the CBC curriculum. The proposed reforms have caused a national debate, some are pushing for more subject choices, while others think dropping mathematics as a core subject will weaken students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills.
