TSC’s Target and Teacher Shortage

TSC plans to deploy 6,000 teachers to address the current teacher shortage of 72,422 in junior secondary schools.

According to TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, there are 76,928 teachers in JSS, which is 51.5% of the required workforce. Out of these:

  • 9,000 are employed directly under permanent and pensionable terms.
  • 8,378 P1 teachers were deployed over the last two years.
  • 39,550 teachers who were initially hired as interns have since been confirmed to permanent terms.

Dr. Macharia said the total number of teachers needed to fully handle Grades 7, 8 and 9 under CBC is 149,350.

Government’s Plan to Close the Gap

To bridge the gap further, government has allocated KSh 4.8 billion for the recruitment of 20,000 JSS intern teachers this month. These intern teachers will undergo specialized training to be equipped to handle JSS classes.

Between May 2023 and November 2024, 60,642 teachers across the country will be trained for JSS. This is part of the overall plan to ease the transition to CBC.
