Teachers Now Part of KPSSA Leadership
Junior school teachers across Kenya have started the process of electing their representatives into the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association (KPSSA). The elections will bring junior school teachers—both interns and those under permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms—into formal leadership positions within the sports association.
This follows a recent directive by the Ministry of Education to include junior school teachers in KPSSA’s structure. The move is in response to concerns that, although junior and primary schools participate jointly in sports activities, junior school teachers have been left out in leadership positions.
Elections Timelines and Levels
As per the official circular issued on 7th May 2025, the elections will start at the lowest level (the cluster or base level) and go all the way to the national level. Here is the breakdown of the election timeline:
Level | Deadline |
---|---|
Cluster/Base | 17th May 2025 |
Zonal | 24th May 2025 |
Sub-County | 6th June 2025 |
County | 13th June 2025 |
Regional | 20th June 2025 |
National | 26th June 2025 |
Each level’s elected Organizing Secretary will automatically join the KPSSA Executive Committee at that respective level.
Voting Process: Physical and Virtual
Due to budgetary constraints, many junior school teachers opted for virtual elections, with platforms like WhatsApp used to conduct meetings and voting sessions.
Each cluster election will be conducted by:
- One headteacher
- One primary school games teacher
- One junior school games teacher from each participating school
Subsequent elections at zone, sub-county, county and national levels will involve previously elected chairpersons, secretaries, treasurers and organizing secretaries.
New Development: KPSSA renamed KPJSSA
As part of the reforms that took place during a March 2025 workshop at Machakos Teachers Training College, the association’s name has been changed to:
Kenya Primary & Junior Schools Sports Association (KPJSSA)
The most significant change in the new constitution was the creation of Organizing Secretary positions at all levels, exclusively for junior school teachers.
This was officially ratified by KPSSA council members during an April 2025 meeting in Mombasa.
Term Two Games for Junior Schools
Alongside the elections, KPSSA has already released the Term Two Ball Games for junior school learners who must be below 15 years old. These are:
- Soccer – Boys and Girls
- Volleyball – Boys and Girls
- Netball – Boys and Girls
- Handball – Boys and Girls
- Basketball 3×3 – Boys and Girls
This sports calendar shows the growing importance of junior school sports in the national education framework and the need for representation in sports leadership.
What This Means Going Forward
The inclusion of junior school teachers in KPSSA leadership is a big step for sports governance in Kenya’s basic education sector. It means fair representation and junior school teachers have a voice in shaping school sports.
It also aligns with the Ministry of Education’s push for inclusivity as per the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which places a lot of emphasis on co-curricular development, including sports.
