Kenya’s 2024 School Calendar Unveiled: What to Expect in the Upcoming Academic Year

The Ministry of Education in Kenya has unveiled the eagerly awaited 2024 school calendar, setting the stage for students, teachers, and parents to prepare for the upcoming academic year. This comprehensive calendar covers pre-primary, primary, secondary schools, and teachers’ training colleges, bringing clarity to the schedules and activities for these educational institutions.

For students, the new year kicks off with reporting dates set for January 8, 2024. This follows a 10-week break, a well-deserved respite for students after the rigors of assessments administered by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The school calendar is divided into three terms, each offering unique opportunities for learning and growth. The first term spans 13 weeks and includes a half-term break lasting 3 days, falling between February 29 and March 3, 2024. This initial term sets the tone for the academic year, giving students and educators a chance to establish their routines and expectations.

Term two, which commences on April 29 and concludes on August 2, 2024, extends for 14 weeks. This term promises more in-depth studies and the opportunity to delve into the subjects that capture students’ imaginations. Additionally, there’s a half-term break scheduled for August 20 to August 23, 2024, allowing students to recharge their batteries for the journey ahead.

The third term, running from August 26 to October 25, 2024, is the shortest of the three, lasting just 9 weeks. It serves as the culmination of the academic year, where students consolidate their knowledge and skills. Following this term, learners will enjoy a well-deserved break before resuming classes on January 3, 2025, reinvigorated for the challenges and opportunities of the new year.

In the realm of assessments, KNEC-administered Kenya Intermediate Education Assessment (KILEA) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will take place from October 28 to October 31, 2024. These assessments are pivotal in evaluating students’ progress and ensuring that the education system maintains its high standards.

For secondary school students, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are scheduled to be held from November 4 to November 22, 2024. These exams mark a significant milestone for students, a culmination of their secondary education, and a stepping stone to further academic or career pursuits.

In addition to students, teachers’ training colleges have their own academic schedule to adhere to. The first term concludes on April 5, 2024, and teachers will enjoy a well-earned break from April 8 to April 26, 2024. The second term kicks off on April 29, running until August 2, 2024. The final term takes place from August 26 to November 8, 2024, ensuring that educators are well-prepared to impart knowledge and guidance to the next generation of learners.

This newly released school calendar offers a structured and organized framework for the educational journey in Kenya in 2024. It’s a roadmap for students, teachers, and parents, guiding them through the academic year, and providing a glimpse of the exciting learning experiences and opportunities that lie ahead. As the year unfolds, students and educators alike will embrace each term with enthusiasm, knowing that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future.
