Kenya’s 2024 School Calendar Unveiled

The Ministry of Education in Kenya, led by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, recently announced the long-awaited school calendar for 2024. This revelation coincided with the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results and marks a new era for learners across the nation.

Returning to Normalcy

The disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the general elections in August 2022 have now subsided. However, the school calendar is poised to resume its normal cycle. PS Belio Kipsang confirmed that a new academic year will commence on January 8, 2024, marking the scheduled reopening of schools.

Extended Learning Period

In a significant departure from recent practices, learners will now engage in three consecutive terms of study, each punctuated by breaks. This strategic adjustment aims to recapture lost time and ensure a comprehensive learning experience. The first term concludes with a three-day half-term break from February 29 to March 3, 2024, followed by a more substantial three-week holiday from April 8 to April 26.

The Longest Term and the Mid-Term Break

The Ministry of Education has outlined the upcoming school calendar, which begins on April 29, 2024, and concludes with a fourteen-week term ending on August 2, 2024. Students will enjoy a three-day mid-term break from June 20 to June 23, 2024, precisely scheduled for rejuvenation and to break the monotony.

The August 2024 Term: A Return to Normalcy

The third term of 2024 commences on August 26 and runs through October 25. Subsequently, a prolonged holiday from October 28, 2024, to January 3, 2025, provides students with ample time for relaxation and personal pursuits.

Institutes for Technical Training

Traditional schools are not the only ones preparing for the new academic year; learners in technical training institutes also anticipate resuming classes on January 8, 2024, aligning with the broader education landscape.

Period of Examinations

From October 28, 2024, to January 3, 2025, an extended holiday period, will pave the way for examinations. The schedule includes both the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) exams, slated between October 28th and October 31st of the same year.
