MKU Dominates Kenya University Games, Clinching 62 Medals

In the thrilling arena of university sports, Mount Kenya University (MKU) has emerged as a powerhouse, leaving a lasting mark at the recently concluded Kenya University Games hosted by the Kenya Universities Sports Federations (KUSF). The event, which unfolded at the University of Nairobi from December 16 to 22, showcased MKU’s exceptional prowess as they clinched a staggering 62 medals, surpassing competition from 15 other universities.

The accolades bestowed upon MKU position it at the zenith of university sporting activities, with Strathmore University trailing behind in second place, securing 30 medals. The University of Nairobi, Maseno, and Masinde Muliro claimed the subsequent spots.

William Luta, MKU’s Sports and Creative Arts Coordinator, hailed this achievement as a significant milestone in nurturing the students’ latent talents. He attributed the success to unwavering dedication, rigorous training, consistent effort, and effective teamwork. Luta expressed confidence in MKU’s ability to raise the bar even higher in the future.

The array of sporting disciplines exhibited during the event was diverse, encompassing traditional sports like football, basketball, volleyball, and athletics, as well as unconventional ones like frisbee, karate, and woodball. MKU’s dominance across this spectrum underscores the institution’s commitment to providing students with a platform to showcase and develop their talents.

In acknowledging the accomplishment, Vice-Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi emphasized the university’s dedication to promoting not only physical well-being but also inclusivity. He revealed the university’s efforts in strengthening the Staff Fitness Centre and supporting various staff wellness initiatives.

Highlighting the spirit of inclusivity, Prof Jaganyi shared an inspiring anecdote of 11 visually impaired students who participated in a charity event by climbing Mt. Longonot, organized by the Kenya Society for the Blind. Such initiatives exemplify MKU’s commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of abilities, have the opportunity to engage in co-curricular activities.

The visionary Founder of MKU, Prof Simon Gicharu, recently underscored the significance of embracing e-sports as a pathway for skill enhancement and strategic thinking. Gicharu articulated the vast career opportunities that electronic sports present, spanning game development, event management, and broadcasting.
