NACADA to Launch Nationwide University Engagements to Combat Drug and Substance Abuse

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) is set to launch a countrywide initiative targeting universities and institutions of higher learning to address the rising cases of drug and substance abuse among students.

This follows the recent release of the Status of Drugs and Substance Use Among University Students in Kenya report which showed worrying trends of drug abuse in universities. NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwasaid the initiative also aligns with the directive from Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who has called for immediate action to curb the growing problem.

“The fight against drug abuse requires a multi-stakeholder approach that involves university administrators, students, government agencies and communities. This initiative will provide sustainable solutions through direct engagement and collaboration,” NACADA said in a statement.

Regional Engagements to Increase Stakeholder Participation

As part of the initiative, NACADA will hold a series of regional forums, grouping institutions based on Kenya’s former provinces to ensure inclusivity and implementation of intervention measures.

These forums will bring together:

  • University administrators
  • Students and faculty members
  • Government agencies
  • Health professionals
  • Community leaders and NGOs

Through these forums stakeholders will identify the root causes, share experiences and develop preventive and intervention strategies tailored to university students.

Drug Abuse in Universities

The survey shows alcohol, bhang (cannabis) and prescription drugs as the most commonly used substancesamong university students. The increasing accessibility and normalization of drug use within learning institutions is a big concern for the well-being and academic performance of students.NACADA will address this by:
✅ Strengthening prevention programmes – Equipping students with life skills to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions.
✅ Enhancing rehabilitation programmes – Creating stronger support systems for affected students.
✅ Raising awareness campaigns – Engaging universities in behavioural change communication initiatives.
✅ Mobilising resources – Supporting institutions in implementing drug control programmes.

“Prevention is our most powerful tool. By empowering students and creating awareness, we can reduce the demand for drugs and build a resilient generation,” NACADA said.

Join the Charge

NACADA is calling on all stakeholders to participate in the upcoming forums, saying the fight against drug abuse requires a collective effort.

“Universities, students, parents and communities should join hands in this initiative. Together we can create a safer and healthier learning environment for our young people,” the Authority said.

This is a critical step in the war against drug and substance abuse among university students to have a drug free academic environment.
