Teachers and Police Officers to Be Denied Treatment in Select Hospitals Over Unpaid Insurance Claims

Teachers and police officers using TSC insured insurance will not access treatment in RUPHA hospitals from Monday, February 24.

Why are the hospitals withdrawing services?

RUPHA announced on Thursday, February 20 that it will suspend services to civil servants due to outstanding payments. The association claims the insurer has not settled medical bills for the past year and hospitals will only stop services until the debt is cleared.

Rev Joseph Kariuki, RUPHA Deputy Chairperson said:

“We will stop providing services to police and teachers using government insurance from Monday.”

Impact on Social Health Authority (SHA) services

RUPHA has also threated to withdraw services to SHA patients meaning a bigger crisis for public servants and citizens on government insured schemes.

For civil servants

This will affect thousands of teachers and police officers, they will not have medical cover in many private hospitals across the country. It raises questions on stability of government insured schemes and alternative healthcare optionsfor the affected.

The government and relevant insurance bodies have not responded to RUPHA’s demands. But if the issue is not resolved, many civil servants will have to go to public hospitals or pay out of pocket for medical services.
