Many teachers in Kenya are frustrated after finding surprise tax arrears in their KRA P9 statements for 2024/2025 Financial Year.
Teachers checked their Tpay accounts and found they owe thousands of shillings in tax arrears despite PAYE deductions in their payslips every month.
A teacher from Nambale sub-county in Busia County was shocked to see an arrears of KSh 23,242 on their P9 form.
“Every month PAYE is deducted from my payslip. What is this now and how will I pay KRA?”
Nationwide Panic Among Teachers
News spread fast and teachers alerted each other on social media. KNUT branches jumped into action with some confirming they had received multiple complaints from members.
“Yes we have received complaints from our members. We will address the issue after we discuss with the employer,” a KNUT official from Nyanza region said.
Recurring KRA Tax Arrears
This is not the first time teachers have been hit with surprise tax demands. Two years ago a similar situation happened and unions had to intervene after many teachers found themselves owed millions to KRA.
TSC told teachers to file their returns early a month ago but the latest is that arrears of KSh 9,000 to KSh 50,000 have been flagged in teachers’ accounts.
What to Do
To avoid penalties, teachers should:
✅ Log into Tpay and check their P9 statements to verify arrears.
✅ Contact their KNUT or KUPPET branches for clarification and possible intervention.
✅ Visit KRA offices to understand the cause of the arrears and possible solutions.Wait and see!
