TSC Revokes Registration of 33 Teachers Across Kenya
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has canceled the registration of 33 teachers in Kenya, preventing them from teaching in both public and private schools.
In a Gazette notice dated February 5, 2025, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said the decision was made under Section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act after a disciplinary process was conducted against the affected teachers.
“The Commission wishes to notify the public that the persons whose names are specified in the Schedule herein below have been removed from the Register of Teachers pursuant to the provisions of section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act,” reads part of the notice.
Why Were These Teachers Deregistered?
According to Section 30 of the TSC Act, a teacher can be removed from the register for various professional and legal violations including:
✔ Fraudulent registration—if a teacher obtained TSC credentials through deception.
✔ Criminal convictions—especially in cases involving sexual offenses, violence or corruption.
✔ Serious misconduct—including gross negligence, incompetence or unethical behavior.
✔ Mental or physical incapacity—if a teacher is deemed unfit to perform their duties.
Once a teacher is deregistered, they lose their professional status and are prohibited from teaching anywhere in Kenya.
Schools Warned Against Hiring Deregistered Teachers
TSC has issued a stern warning to school heads and administrators against employing unregistered individuals, saying it’s a criminal offense.
“Any person who is not a registered teacher under the Act and engages in teaching or assists in teaching at any school is in violation of the law,” the Gazette notice stated.
Under Regulation 18(1)(c) and (d) of the Code of Regulations for Teachers, any school found hiring an unregistered teacher risks: ✅ A fine of at least KSh 100,000, or
✅ Imprisonment for two years, or both.
TSC’s Ongoing War on Teachers
This is not the first time TSC has done this:
- August 2024 – 33 teachers were deregistered.
- Earlier in 2024 – 65 teachers lost their registration over undisclosed disciplinary issues.
TSC has always made it clear that teacher professionalism and discipline are non-negotiable and only qualified and ethical teachers will serve in Kenya’s education system.
What’s Next for the Deregistered Teachers?
Teachers whose registration has been cancelled can only appeal to TSC or Employment and Labour Relations Court for reinstatement. However, reinstatement is not guaranteed especially in cases of serious misconduct or criminal offenses.
