TSC has released January 2025 salaries and teachers are getting a bonus due to tax relief and annual leave allowance. Some banks have already credited teachers’ accounts, others will do so today. Absa, KCB and Equity have already done so, while Co-operative, Family and National Bank will do so today.
Tax Relief and Salary Increment
Teachers have received a Ksh 550 to Ksh 1,290 net salary increase following the implementation of Tax Laws (Amendment) Act, 2024 which was effective from 27th December 2024.
KRA has directed employers to adjust Pay As You Earn (PAYE) calculations in favor of employees. Before, PAYE was computed before adding allowances to the basic salary but including SHIF, Housing Levy, NSSF and Provident Fund deductions.
With this adjustment, salaried employees including teachers and civil servants will get a 2% to 5% net salary increase depending on the job group.
Annual Leave Allowance
In addition to the tax relief, teachers have also received their annual leave allowance which is paid every January. However 46,000 newly confirmed teachers did not receive this benefit as they have not yet met the eligibility criteria.
