University of Nairobi Faces Crisis as UASU Issues Strike Notice

UASU issues 7-day strike notice to UoN over mismanagement and corruption

UoN UASU Chapter Chairperson Dr. Richard Bosire addressed a press conference on February 19, 2025 and accused the university’s leadership of flouting regulations and massive looting that is killing the institution.

Remove University Council

UASU wants the University Council dissolved and specifically Chairperson Amukoa Anangwe removed.

“We shall stop all activity in the university in 7 days,” warned UASU, adding, “The University of Nairobi is dying because of looting!”

UASU wants Education CS Julius Ogamba to dissolve the council or face nationwide protests.

Land Grabbing

Dr. Bosire claims powerful government officials are trying to take over UoN’s land, particularly a prime plot opposite KBC and near Hotel Boulevard on James Gichuru Road.

The land which hosts graduate apartments is being eyed for illegal acquisition. UASU wants the EACC to investigate what they call a multi-billion scam.

Leadership crisis at UoN

The university has been in leadership wrangles for the last 5 years with multiple power struggles between the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and the Council.

UASU says the council is blocking Acting VC Prof. Margaret Hutchinson from running the institution.

“The council and the vice chancellor must follow the rules,” said Dr. Bosire.

“We fear if nothing is done, the University of Nairobi as we know it is dying” added Dr. Maloba Wekesa UoN UASU Secretary.

Last year VC Prof. Stephen Kiama was suspended and later fired after a bitter leadership battle within the institution.

Now Acting VC Prof. Hutchinson is facing new opposition and UASU is warning of a total shut down if urgent reforms are not implemented.## What’s next?

UASU will shutdown all activity and now it’s up to the Education Ministry.

If nothing happens in 7 days UoN will be in another crisis and that’s on top of the existing problems faced by public universities in Kenya including financial mismanagement, delayed salaries and leadership wrangles.
