University Students Urged to Use HELB Loans Wisely

Just days after the Kenyan government released Ksh3.3 billion in Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds to first and second-year university students, education experts are urging learners to use the money responsibly.

Avoid Betting, Alcohol, and Reckless Spending

Educationists, led by Professor Owen Ngumi, the Dean of the School of Education, Arts, and Social Sciences at Zetech University, are warning students against misusing their loans on non-essential expenses, especially gambling, drugs, and alcohol.

“We have spoken to our students and advised them to wisely use the money they have received from HELB. Let them stay away from reckless spending like betting and alcoholism,” said Prof Ngumi.

He made these comments during a public lecture by Dr. Joseph Mwai, a Doctor of Metaphysical Solipsism, at Zetech University’s Thika Road Campus in Ruiru, Kiambu County. The event was organized in collaboration with the Philosophical Association of Kenya.

Prioritize Studies and Financial Discipline

Dr. Joyce Ngugi, a Philosopher, educationist, and former Kiambu Deputy Governor, emphasized the importance of time management and financial discipline.

“Students have very little study time and should use it well. They should not waste resources and focus on building their careers,” she advised.

She also encouraged students to adopt critical thinking and philosophical teachings to expound their opportunities and make informed decisions.

The HELB Misuse Concern

With increasing cases of HELB being misused for entertainment, betting and unnecessary luxuries, education experts say students should:

  • Use the funds mostly for tuition, learning materials and upkeep.
  • Don’t take unnecessary loans to fund a lifestyle.
  • Invest in skills development, online courses and business ideas where possible.
  • Save and budget wisely to be financially stable throughout the semester.

This comes as many students end up in financial struggles due to poor money management and can’t meet their basic needs.

The message is clear: Use HELB wisely—your future is at stake!
