Elijah Mungai, the Director of Projects Coordination and Delivery at the Ministry of Education, shared insights during the launch of the exercise in Athi-River. The selection process spans all 47 counties and 15 urban informal settlements across the nation, adopting a community-based model to identify the most vulnerable children. Emphasizing the inclusivity of the program, Mungai highlighted that while the eligibility cut-off stands at 280 marks, priority is given to marginalized and special needs learners.
The Elimu Scholarships extend beyond mere fee payments. The comprehensive support includes coverage for personal effects, transportation to and from school, and an essential mentorship and monitoring framework for the recipients. Mungai reaffirmed the government’s dedication to inclusivity by acknowledging learners with special needs. For this category, the eligibility criteria will be adjusted to ensure that these deserving students are not left behind.

Micah Andoro, the Athi-River Sub-County Senior Assistant County Commissioner, shed light on the meticulous selection process. Out of 297 applications received, a Community Selection Advisory Committee will sift through the candidates, shortlisting 41 individuals, comprising 23 girls and 18 boys. The committee’s approach involves a blend of intelligence examination and physical visits to guarantee that only the most deserving applicants are chosen.
