The Kenya National Drama and Film Festival (KNDFF) is ongoing at Moi Girls School, Kibra, Nairobi County where students are using performance art to address burning social issues such as the digital economy, vaccination campaigns, femicide, and gender-based violence.
This year’s festival, with the theme “Leveraging Technology to Nurture Talent While Inculcating National Values for Socio-Economic Prosperity,” also has entries on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Regional Competitions and Performance Categories
Regional competitions are ongoing across Nyanza, Central, Coast, Rift Valley, Eastern, Western, North Eastern and Nairobi with students competing in 11 performance genres including:
- Plays
- Creative cultural dances
- Modern dance
- Narratives
- Choral verses
- Solo verses
Vincent Akuka, Drama Secondary Chairperson for Nairobi Region said students are not afraid to tackle tough conversations including gender-based violence and national vaccination policy.
“Our students are not shying away from tough conversations. We have seen powerful performances on gender-based violence, femicide and even vaccinating cattle which has been a national debate,” Akuka said.
He praised the scriptwriters for their understanding of societal challenges using drama to raise awareness and spark conversations.
Equity Bank’s Ksh 25 Million Investment in KNDFF
Equity Bank has invested Ksh 25 million in the festival, supporting county and regional KNDFF committees and rewarding outstanding schools and trainers with certificates, trophies and cash prizes.
Martin Wachira, Equity Bank’s Branch Manager Kilimani said the bank is committed to education and youth empowerment.
“We are excited to partner with KNDFF to create opportunities for young people in the creative arts and support them to explore critical social issues,” Wachira said.
Through the Equity Leadership Program former students are mentoring the next generation offering guidance on career development in the creative arts.

Looking forward to the National Festival in Nakuru
The KNDFF regional competitions will culminate in the national festival in Nakuru in April.
In partnership with Ministry of Education, Equity Bank is working with schools to motivate learners and trainers to create an environment where creativity is nurtured within the education system.
This aims to have students see art as a career option, build sustainable businesses and transform society through the creative economy.
