KNUT Protests Tenwek Hospital’s Suspension of SHA Services for Teachers

KNUT hits out at AGC Tenwek Hospital’s decision to stop SHA services for teachers

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has condemned AGC Tenwek Hospital’s decision to stop Social Health Authority (SHA) services for teachers, citing delayed payments from the government.

Speaking on the matter, Kipkelion Branch Executive Secretary David Bore said the move is unfair and ill-advised and asked the hospital to prioritize teachers’ healthcare.

Hundreds of Teachers Affected

Bore said the suspension has already left hundreds of teachers without medical care, causing panic among them and their families.

Key Concerns Raised by KNUT:

Teachers are in the dark about deductions made for SHA services
Government delayed payment to hospitals is affecting service delivery
Teachers should have a choice to choose their own medical schemes

“Tenwek has stopped treating teachers. As a union, we are asking this hospital to show true Christianity and have mercy on teachers. This is like inviting sickness to teachers and is not good,” said Bore.

Call to Action

KNUT wants:

  • Government & TSC to release the medical funds today
  • Refund teachers’ deductions if SHA cannot meet their healthcare needs
  • Allow teachers to choose alternative medical covers instead of being forced to SHA

“Government deducts money from teachers and we don’t know where this money goes yet it should pay bills on time,” Bore lamented.

Why did Tenwek stop SHA services?

  • The hospital claims TSC has failed to remit teachers’ medical payments on time and therefore stopped services until the matter is resolved.
  • This may set a precedent for other hospitals to follow and leave thousands of teachers stranded without medical cover.

What’s Next?

  • Will TSC respond to KNUT’s concerns and clear the outstanding payments?
  • Should teachers be allowed to choose alternative medical schemes instead of SHA?
