Nakuru High School Closed Indefinitely After Student Unrest Over Food Issues

Learning at Nakuru High School has been suspended indefinitely after a student riot on Sunday, February 9.

Students were angry over a string of issues—mainly food and administration policies—and went on a 6 hour rampage, destroying school property.

What Was the Cause of the Upheaval?

Students were protesting against:

✅ Removal of mid-morning tea and bread from the school menu
✅ Scrapping of milk from their morning tea
✅ Introduction of a card system at the canteen, instead of cash
✅ Failure to upgrade entertainment facilities despite students paying fees for improvements

The protest started at 8:50 PM and went on till early morning of Monday, February 10 and police was called in to restore order.

Students broke into the dining hall and storage room, took food and some were seen eating what they had taken.

They also vandalized the administration block, classrooms and dormitories.

School Closed & Students Sent Home

After the chaos, Nakuru County Director of Education (CDE) Victoria Mulili visited the school to assess the situation.

On Monday, February 10, students were sent home indefinitely and it’s expected the school will be closed for at least a week as authorities investigate.
