The upcoming Inter-County Swimming Championships, scheduled for February 3-4 at St Christopher’s School in Nanyuki, will see the participation of six public schools sponsored by the Private and International Preparatory Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA). This initiative aims to promote swimming in public schools, aligning with the emphasis on the sport in the newly established Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The move has received widespread support, as PIPSSA waives entry fees for public schools to foster inclusive participation.
Participating Public Schools
The six public schools sponsored by PIPSSA are Nyeri High, Nanyuki High, Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls, Karatina Girls, Nyandarua High, and Moi Complex Primary School in Nyeri Town. This inclusion reflects a commitment to extending sporting opportunities to public schools, acknowledging the challenges they face.
Organizers’ Perspective
Damaris Muthoni, the organizing secretary, expressed gratitude for the positive response from stakeholders, acknowledging PIPSSA’s efforts in promoting swimming in public schools. She highlighted the financial challenges faced by public schools and emphasized the waiver of entry fees as a supportive measure. Preparations for the event are in progress, with the organizers committed to ensuring a successful championship.

Final Thoughts
The inclusion of public schools in the Inter-County Swimming Championships through PIPSSA’s sponsorship marks a significant step towards fostering sports inclusivity. By waiving entry fees for public schools and emphasizing swimming in the CBC, the organizers aim to create a platform where students from diverse backgrounds can showcase their talents and embrace the spirit of healthy competition. The event promises not only to be a celebration of swimming prowess but also a testament to the collaborative efforts to enrich the sports landscape in schools.
